Friends of Balboa Park has identified needs and brought to fruition many collaborative projects, programs and events in the Park.

2006 – Completed Projects & Programs

  • Botanical Garden Fountain Restoration: Completed the re-creation, construction, and installation of finials (from the 1915 Exposition) of the fountains near the Reflection Pond. Dedication event held in spring, 2006.
  • Park-wide Brochures: provided partial funding for park-wide brochures, in partnership with the House of Hospitality to promote Balboa Park.
  • Summer Camp Brochures: In partnership with the Balboa Park Educators Council, provided funding for the annual brochure promoting summer camp programs in Balboa Park. Brochure connects ˝ & full day programs from different park organizations, promoting collaboration.
  • Junior Friends of Balboa Park Patch Program: In partnership with Balboa Park Educators Council, provided funding for brochure and patches promoting activities for youth groups in the park.
  • Balboa Park Resource Directory: Updated, published, and distributing the 4th Edition park-wide Resource Directory - a comprehensive guide of the museums, institutions, sports and recreation facilities, and user groups in the park.
  • Balboa Park Safety & Security Cooperative: Furnished a small grant to the group for purposes of addressing safety concerns in the park. To date, digital cameras have been purchased for use by park rangers in documenting homeless and other security/vandalism problems in the park.
  • Horticulture: Matched funds from the City to help purchase an engraving machine to label plants in park for enjoyment of park visitors.
  • Signage: Provided matching funds to the San Diego Floral Association for new signage in front of the Casa del Prado building.
  • Annual Employee Picnic: Provided support, together with the Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol, for the annual picnic/BBQ for Park & Rec. employees.
  • Dog Park Fence: With support from a private donor, constructed a fence for the off leash dog area at Nates Point.
  • Annual Millennium Awards Luncheon: Hosted the Sixth Annual luncheon honoring volunteers and philanthropists who have dedicated decades of service to the park.
  • December Nights Information Booths: Providing recruitment & staffing for the information booths at December Nights, the annual holiday festival.
  • Lights on the Prado: Provided funding to City of San Diego to replace permanent LED lights along the Prado.
